Team Production Meeting #1

Date: 18.11.13
Who Was Present: Jade-Lee Peachy Gordan, Shelby Lucier, Christen Saptou
Agenda:

  • Script Assessment - We looked at all three scripts and assess what we liked about the individual scripts. Then we looked how we could merge ideas together to make an even better screen play.
  • Script Choice - We chose Shelby's script as it showed more potential as the characters background were interesting. We thought it was a stronger and more creative storyline we could play with. However we did think we could make it better by merging Shelby's script with the idea of a 'flashback' which we got from my script, to show how Phoebe (main character)  got her powers; we thought that we could open with the flashback of the event that happened to Phoebe to get the power of freezing any object.
  • Ideas For Redraft
    - Opening with flashback of the inside, of the human body  freezing. which that fades into white, with some sort of purple sun-ray pulling back to a shot of Phoebe drowning in icy water. then suddenly her eyes open. While this playing of the V.O
    - Flashbacks, we were thinking of doing 3. the first opening one ^. Also during the scene, could be ice fishing trip with her dad. Another one could be at the end, where the ice cracks and she plummets in.
    - Instead of the male character being called Luke, we changed it to Ke'nan (got the name from my script)
Redrafting the script was assigned to Shelby Lucier, however it will be assessed on again to make any improvement that need be if there is any disputes in the group.

Teenage Hero Story Pitch

Hero: Lilly White AKA The Fusion Mask

Situation: Lilly is a normal 17 year old girl. Well...as normal as you can get. She lives in England near the coast, in a little village called Exeter. Lilly was in a tragic accident that could of been fatal just a while back. She went to the seaside with her sister for the day. Where it happened she drowned but was saved by brave heroic lifeguard Jason  the one with the wash board abs, well that's what her sister told her. She was technical dead for 10 minutes! Until she recovered and that's when things changed and took us to the future, which is present day. The year is 2999 it was a normal day for Lilly, Ke'nan and Lib at Mountain High College. That's what they thought. Suddenly the lights in the corridor flicked they all assumed the generator was playing up again, but as soon as the lights came back on Lilly was gone! Then a voice out no where spoke 'Hey guys I'm right here!' it was Lilly she had morphed into the background, she was see-through, invisible, transparent...  'Ke'nan it's me Lilly!'. they passed the water-fountain then the lights flickered again. Off and on. Standing next to Ke'nan where Lilly was stood another Ke'nan...

New opportunity: The opportunity is presented to Lilly to use her morphing powers, to defeat Precila from destroying the earth from marsh-ling invaders seek a new planet to call home. But Precila has other plans to take control and lead the earth to its doom!

Goal: To get rid of Precila once and for all.

Conflict: Trying to handle her new powers and keeping them a secret, however Lilly really wants to tell her best friend but scared he'll tell her friend which is my nemesis. Does she trust Ke'nan with her secret. Their friendship will be put to the test!

Part 2. Misfits Dialogue - Analyse characters -Nathan, Kelly, Curtis, Simon, Alisha, Gary

The Purpose of dialogue in a clip is to establish and introduce a characters individuality. This is done so that the audience knows which character is which, for themselves rather than getting confused with all the other casts different persona's. It also shows the exposition of the character e.g. back story, accent, personality. Dialogue can set a tone, theme, genre in a programme. Misfits' genre is a youth drama that relates to different themes that young adults go through e.g. finding identity, crime, language and what they go through in different situations. In result of this the director is hoping to grab the attention of the audience by amusing and entertaining the viewer.

Nathan...

Nathan is the one of character shown in the introduction of the episode smoking. This habit could suggest that Nathan has a addictive personality, this means some traits of his personality he'll not easily surrender certain things in this episode. When you notice Nathan's physical appearance you can see his jumpsuit has dirty stains  on it; which could illustrate he might not be a nice or irritating person to hang around at times.

In the group, Nathan is first one to speak back to the probation worker, he done this to establish a more authority amongst everyone else. He does this by questioning what society thinks about the group by saying, "What if we are scum?" this shows his character has some intelligence  however he carries on talking, whilst point at Gary, "But some people are born criminals!" also showing he is sarcastic, a free willing individual who is not afraid of being out spoken and joking about the situation.
By Nathan asserting him self as the joker in the group, he is instantly likeable to the audience. However this could show signs of insecurity, as joking is a common sign this could also be a sign of attention seeking. Nathan has a calm voice and a Irish accent, which makes him non aggressive as in the UK we cant categorise his accent. However his vocabulary is insensitive, such as when he calls Simon a weird kid but thats after he is the first on to acknowledged Simon existence by asking him " Are you al-right there...?" showing his compassionate side, but then he ruins that by insulting Kelly's accent.

Kelly...
Kelly is the third one shown in the changing room brushing her hair in the opening scene. Straight away this shows she cares about her appearance this could suggest she's self-conscious and wants people to take more seriously. Her appearance alone describes her personality as being a stereotypical chav: brushed back ponytail, big gold hoop earrings, chain and a thick accent. As the stereotypically chav she performs on screen, tells the the audience straight away that she has a aggressive tone, is likely to swear a lot (proven in the opening clip as she shows her middle finger to Curtis for making fun of her accent.) and is not a person you want to be on their bad side.

Kelly is also not a doormat that you can walk all over on when ever you pleas as she will fight back, this is shown when Curtis tell the probation worker that he shouldn't be here and her reply was, 'Why, you think you better then us or somethin?' this comment illustrates she will not take insults from no one. I think the way this was done by choosing Curtis to do it because he a stereotypical version of a black show the audience that Kelly is not racist as she stands up to him instead of being scared and classing him as an equal  I think this is important as misfits is based in Britain which its population is mostly white it shows diversity in cultures. i would say Kelly is laid back and not bothered with what's she done as this is shown by he body language in the first scene when the group is together, she's leaning on the fence not paying attention to probation work while he is talking.

Curtis...

Curtis is represented in the first scene as a the leading alpha male of the group, this could be of his physical appearance and him being aware of it as his body and health is in peak condition for an athlete. This shows he thinks highly of him self which makes him seem big-headed and ignorant to others as he doesn't think he should be doing time, because he got caught slipping for having passion over drugs 'which were his mates' however he dose take responsibility as he tells the probation worker, 'Can I move to a different group?' ' This isn't gonna work for me!'. Although he thinks his better he trys to bound with the other people in the group while they there for example when both Nathan and him make fun of Kelly's accent, 'Is that for real?'.

Curtis has a tribal tattoo on his left shoulder, this could be important to his ethnic background. He also wears two gold chains one of a cross suggests he's religious and another with a Roman coin which represents good luck which every time he gets nervous he holds or kisses. Curtis wears his jumpsuit half way and the ties his sleeves around his waist with a plain vest-top, this could be done to show he's one foot out the door one foot in, showing his not fully committed to his community service. Or to show off his muscular body for the girls, or he thinks he looks better wearing it that way.

Simon...

Simon is the shy and awkward character in the group, that keeps him to him self, nobody really knows his story as his body language is closed in with always that same blank expression with his hands in his pockets. I think it's effective how he hasn't been given dialogue in the opening as it tells you his personality in itself , also making him a mysterious character, which the audience can either be intrigued or bored of!
Simon shows signs of OCD behave when we fist see him on screen when he is getting presentable  no button out of place with a flat collar. No hair out of place, when you see inside his locker its clean and neat. However what puzzles me his he is looking for his phone, this could show signs of antisocial behaver as he seems to spend most time on his phone then interacting with humans. Also could show that he's into gadgets and gives the audience some clue of what he was in for.

Alisha...

Alisha is the first depicted from the opening scene getting change, in slow motion this effect was done to show that she was the attractive female in the group that all the boys desired. It also showed he cheeky and flirtatious side as well. Alisha is very comfortable with her body as she tries to expose as much of her flesh as she can, her top few buttons are undone just so her breasts can be perking out, sleeves are rolled up. This could tell us she seeks a lot of attention from males, this could be because of farther issues e.g. not having a farther around or farther sexually abusing he when she was younger, and that all she knows but deep down she wants to find love .

when the probation worker is addressing the group, she gets a phone call from one of her friend and takes, showing she has no sense of who has authority and would rather be somewhere else doing something else. Alisha wants to be accepted and she realises that Nathan has become a leader figure in the group so while Nathan and Gary are fighting, she's the giggling, smiling and agreeing to what others are say. her tone of voice is very sarcastic and edgy but then she can alter it to sweet and soft. I think she a manipulative character as she can persuade yet defend people.

Gary...
Gary, is portrayed as the little guy with a big temper/ aggregation  In the opening the camera angle is looking up at him give him a dominate appearance which is supposed to be intimidating  He has a lot of anger and hatred in his tone, also his vocabulary lacks in intelligence  His first piece of dialogue is after Nathan provokes him and Gary responded with 'Are you looking to get stabbed?' followed by 'I'll rip out your throat and sh*t down your neck!

Gary is shown as someone always causing trouble best to keep away, any chance of a fight he takes it, this might be to do with his confidence in his hight, because generally shorter people feel they have to prove physically I'm stronger then the next guy.

Point Break

-Sound-

The project was to get a clip from 'Point Break' and then upload it into Premiere Pro, after uploading it successfully we took the original sound off the clip and deleted it. Then creating our own sounds to compliment what was seen on screen either by downloading sounds from http://www.freesound.org/ or using a sound recorder. Once we finished picking the sounds we wanted we put them into a sequence that overlapped with the clip.

Our self-made sequence...

In conclusion as an amateur first time doing this I believe  the sound that was added was in time with the clip it self. The part I'm must pleased with is when the masked men goes through the garden and crashes into the swings then step into the paddling pool creating a big splash (which I emphasized it more in the scene, doing this by changing the opacity of the sound), I think it matched up to the clip very well. However my main issue for this clip I couldn't find was the right thumping sound that suited well for the women hitting Keanu Reeves who played Johnny Utah. So I used a sound recorder, to record my own sound for this, only using an rucksack that had a jumper in side and a umbrella. This worked well however I found it hard to match the hits I recorded in time with the visual representation on screen which was occurring in a irregular pattern.

The last part was once we had finished, we had to export the video we did this by going to: File > Export Setting. After that a window should appear that has pre-sets, file name, formats on ect. IN this window change the format to 'H.264' and change the pre-set to 'Youtube HD 1080p'. we had to change the name to 'Point Break(but whatever name is suitable that you have chosen)so that is was recognisable to the audience. Finally press export and wait till the video to load exporting.

Colour Correction

In media we got introduced to colour effects and controls that's can be used in changing the effects in a video. We got shown RGB- how the purpose is for sensing, representations and display of images in every electronic screens such as laptops or mobiles etc.. The RGB colour model is an additive colour model in which red, green and blue light are added together in various ways to reproduce a broad array of colours, the name comes from the initials of the three additive primary colours (red, green and blue). We also learnt about Luminance which is how the light is portrayed on the screen (light or dark). To add on we looked at Chrominance this is the strength of the colour. Chrominance is usually represented as two colour-difference components: U=B' - Y' (blue-luma) and V=R' - Y' (red-luma). We also learnt about Broadcast Safe which is the safety of the colours on the screen.

Panel menu on the bottom right hand corner
We used Premiere Pro by going to: Windows > Workspace > Colour Corrections
This then comes up with a tab where you can monitor colour corrections. On this iduidual tab click on its panel menu, it will come up with different options either click: Vectorscope, YC Waveform or RGB Parade - and it will bring up different methods of seeing colour tones.

                                                               Vectorscope:
Displays the Chrominance levels, if it goes past the green by 75% this means
it's not Broadcast Safe.

YC Waveform:
This displays Luminance and Chrominance at the same time.
1.0 = pure white. 0.0 = pure black

  RGB Parade:

Displays the colour equality. As you can see in the picture there's a graph, which shows the bend of each colour. This tells us how much Chrominance of each colour is on the screen.

Also using the Jarle's Looks pre-set (made by Jarle Leirpoll) for different colour effects, adding themes to a particular part of the video created, here is our three examples:

Screenshot of the video in 'Colour Negative'.

Screenshot of the video in 'Bleach Bypass 01'.

Screenshot of the video in 'speia'

Continuity Editing

Continuity editing is the professional style of film editing and video editing in the post-production way of film-making of narrative films and television programs. It involves diffident within it such as match-on-action, shot reverse shot/eye-line match and also the 180° rule. Continuity editing consists of four micro elements such as:
  1. Editing
  2. Mise-en-scene
  3. Camera-work/ Cinematography
  4. Sound
Why is continuity used?
It's to smooth out any of the inherent of discontinuity, of the editing process and to establish a logical coherence between shot of actors.

Common techniques of continuity editing
We looked at 3 main different styles of continuity editing.

Shot-reverse-shot technique (eye-line match):
Is a film technique where one character is looking often off-screen at another character or object, and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character or object. Normally characters are shown facing in opposite directions, the viewers perception is they are looking at each other.

Example of shot-reverse-shot
Match-on-action technique:
Is used in filming to show the consistency between 2 shots connecting together causing it to be dramatic and creating tension. It's an editing technique for continuity editing in which one shot cuts to another shot portraying the action from the subject in the first shot, this creates the impression of a sense of continuity- the action carrying through creates a a 'visual bridge' which draws the viewer's attention from the slight cutting.

Layout of 180° rule

180° Rule:
In filming the 180° rule is a guideline that members in scene should have the same left-right relationship to each other. Making sure the screen spatial awareness is filmed on one side of the 180° line, this allows the audience to have a greater sense of the location in the scene in terms of what may be off-screen in some shots, for example in shot reverse shots .

To round things off ...V for Vendetta.
LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!!!
